LevelDatic in World’s Largest Cruise Ship

The world’s largest cruise vessel Freedom of the Seas under construction for Royal Caribbean Inc. at Aker Finnyards Turku shipyard in Finland is to be fitted with LevelDatic 100S for remote continuous on-line monitoring of levels in fuel tanks, fresh water and ballast water tanks. Dry compartments and void spaces will also be continuously monitored on-line by LevelDatic 100S for possible water ingress.

LevelDatic is considered as the preferred system for tank level gauging and water ingress monitoring by all major cruise ship companies because of the high accuracy and reliability of the measurements through the ship’s lifetime providing enhanced safety for the vessels.

More than 50% of the cruise vessel newbuildings have been fitted with LevelDatic 100S. Several sailing cruise vessels have been retrofitted with LevelDatic replacing failed systems delivered by other manufacturers.

The continuous on-line information on tank levels and possible water ingress is also used as input in the Onboard-Napa loading calculator to provide reliable information about the stability and loading conditions of the vessel including vessel intact stability in case of flooding or other damage influencing the stability.

LevelDatic and Onboard-Napa have jointly developed the Decision support for Flooding Control (DFC) which provides guidance and instructions on information cards for the officers onboard for what to do in order to minimize the consequences in case of flooding.

With 158,000 gross tons the Freedom of the Seas is about 15% larger than the Voyager class vessels of which five were delivered from the same shipyard in 1999-2003. She will be the world’s largest cruise vessel when she enters service in April 2006, her sister vessel will be delivered in 2007.

The vessel has a passenger capacity is 3,600 and a crew of 1,400.

The length of Freedom of the Seas is 339 m and the breadth 38.6 m. The engine output is 75,600 kW giving the vessel a speed of about. 22 knots.

The Freedom of the Seas will sail seven day cruises from Miami year round, with bookings scheduled to open in spring 2005.

Royal Caribbean International is a global cruise brand with 19 ships in service and two under construction, including the two Freedom class vessels.
